FOUR FOLKS

location : CHANDIGARH

Project Typology : HOSPITALITY

In India, when we talk about the legacies been transferred from one generation to another, the story of four folks happens to be one of that. The café is owned by the grandchildren of Mrs. Harbhajan Kaur (nani) who was termed as ‘entrepreneur of the year’ by Anand Mahindra. The brother-sister duo and their spouses wanted a place that could celebrate the togetherness, family feasting, foodie friends bonding and the moments one needs for themselves. The application of the concept of a European street café made it possible to create a space that would attract city residents of all ages. The aim of this project was to create something new and unusual in the city, a kind of explosion that would initiate positive changes and trends in the design of the city. Elements were individually identified from the European streets and applied in the space, from the smallest details such as the customized manhole covers to the pseudo shop fronts to a miniature wishing well- to resonate European culture. The wall on one side of the stairs was embellished with a false Spanish balcony with a ladder graffiti to show that there is a lower level. Chairs were picked out from the designs of the Master architect Le Corbusier to keep the local elements as well as the use of exposed brick on walls. A wall was designed that acted as a showcase to display the work of their mother who happens to be an evolving potter. The soft, warm colours were chosen in order to create a comfortable atmosphere.
